20 Years in the Making, New Kid’s Video Shares Historic Footage 

Shazak, the group known for blending Torah learning and fun, has just released its latest offering: a 20-minute documentary on the adventures of a kernel of wheat, tracing the journey from the wheat field to the cooling racks at a Shmurah Matzah Bakery. 

Rabbi Moshe Moscowitz, director of Shazak, began the project 20 years ago, back when Chicago was home to its own Shmurah matzah bakery. Since Rabbi Moscowitz is a longtime rabbinic coordinator at the cRc Kosher (Chicago Rabbinical Council), he was personally involved in supervising the factory and arranged for pictures to be taken, including images of the late Rabbi Moshe Miller, ZT”L a local kabbalist and scholar who was involved in the enterprise. 

Despite its historic significance, the video is classic Shazak, with David Sokoloff’s whimsical drawings, Moscowitz’s slapstick comedy, and lots of fun animation to keep young minds engaged. 

The video was a long time coming. 

The initial photos and cartoon drawings were prepared 20 years ago. But the project was set aside as the Shazak team focused on building out its extensive array of Parsha offerings–including audio, video, coloring sheets, games, and even a mock newspaper report on every Parsha and Holiday. 

This year, the time came for the video to be completed with voices recorded this winter as well as stunning footage of the Boro Park Matzah Bakery, provided by Chabad.org. 

“Preparing this video was a unique experience for me,” says Moscowitz, who has been in the field of education for four decades. “On one hand, we are using tools and technology that we did not dream of when we began. Yet, the storyline, images, and jokes were virtually untouched. The Torah teachings, quality entertainment, and good humor are as fresh today as they were then.”
