MUMBAI — “You are never going to stop anybody who steps inside the Chabad House” - those were the oft-repeated words of Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg, head of the Mumbai headquarters of the Chabad House. And that was the instruction followed on Nov 26, 2008 when terrorists stormed in, brutally killing the rabbi, his pregnant wife Rivka and four others.
SHOCKING: Thursday evening, after sitting through an hour-long recitation of the jury’s verdicts in Sioux Falls, Iowa, Reb Shalom Mordechai Rubashkin was detained pending a bail hearing at the insistence of Peter Deegan. If that were not shocking enough, the ordeal he was subsequently put through is positively offensive, contemptible, and a black mark on the justice system of the United States.
Reb Shalom Mordechai was taken by the US Marshals service to South Dakota State penitentiary in Sioux Falls pending transfer to Iowa. He was not allowed to make a phone call to inform his lawyers or his family of his location. One of the Marshals, upon learning of this, was nice enough to call the family. They would have otherwise not known where he was.

Emissaries of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement are a hardy lot — part envoys, part pioneers — who agree to settle anywhere in the world where their leaders decide that Jewish communities need bolstering, whether in Anchorage or Bangkok or northern Kyrgyzstan.
Often the only Lubavitchers for miles around, they are used to being gawked at and asked to explain themselves, usually in a nice way, though not always. “How long did it take to grow that beard, dude?” is a pretty common query in the United States, they say.

The cause was complications of sarcoidosis, a lung disease, his son Sam said.
Judge Sifton handled many major cases in more than 30 years on the bench, many of them as chief judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York.
One of those cases was the issue of the ownership of the library of Aguch. On January 6 1987 Judge Sifton declared victory in favor of the Chassidim and thus became Didan Notzach.

Barnstable police respond to a break-in at the Chabad Jewish Center on West Main Street in Hyannis yesterday.
HYANNIS, MA — Three youths will be arraigned Friday morning in connection with Tuesday’s break-in at the Chabad Jewish Center of Cape Cod. The local teenagers are accused of vandalizing the synagogue, pulling a charity box off the wall, smashing doors, and throwing phylacteries on the floor. Rabbi Berkowitz stands inside the bullet-scarred Nariman House.
It is a sticky monsoon day in Mumbai, and Rabbi Avraham Berkowitz walks through the shell of Nariman House. Today, the ruined five-storey structure is testament to the ferocity of the terrorists’ incursion and their battle with Indian commandos. It seems impossible that anyone could have come out alive. All its window frames are empty. The lift is slumped at the bottom of its shaft, and giant, jagged chunks of the internal stairway and handrail are missing. At one point, a section of wall many metres high is gone, and the stairs would be open to the sky if not for a plastic draping. Some rooms appear almost untouched; in others, the walls are pulverised, the splatter-marks of gunfire everywhere.

Who are American Jewry’s heroes?
Mostly, they’re Lubavitchers. Or so it seemed, when the Jewish Federations of North America — the organization that until recently was called United Jewish Communities — announced the semifinalists of its online competition to select the winner of the inaugural Jewish Community Hero Award. Twelve of the 20 semifinalists were members of the Hasidic Chabad-Lubavitch sect, and Chabad’s dominance among the results has made the competition a target for some critics.

But one of the sellers, Aaron Tzivin, who owns the Crown Heights House of Glatt in Brooklyn, N.Y, told jurors that he still has a good relationship with the plant's former owners, the Rubashkin family.
