KFAR CHABAD, Israel — The Jewish community of Kfar Chabad, Israel, mourned the passing Wednesday of resident Rabbi Amos Karniel, who passed away at age 68 after a long illness.
According to those who knew the veteran educator ñ who despite a debilitating disease that forced him to retire early continued to gather children together to read them stories ñ Karniel once remarked that the only difference between a carpenter and a teacher is that a carpenter can see the effects of his labor almost immediately. A teacher, on the other hand, must wait 25 or 30 years.

SYDNEY, Australia — Australia's Jewish community was in shock Friday morning, one day after a horrific car accident along the main Sydney-to-Melbourne highway took the lives of longtime members Zev and Rochel Simons.
According to Australian news reports, the couple perished when the Toyota minivan driven by Rochel Simons, 48, crossed the median and was struck by a tanker truck. The driver of the truck, a 39-year-old man whose identity was not released by authorities, also died in the crash. Wreckage and the threat of fuel igniting blocked traffic on the arterial Hume Highway in both directions for hours.

Soldiers set up a menorah outside the dining facility at Camp Taji, Iraq. Some 50 service members attended at the camp to mark the first night of Chanukah. Jewish chaplain Capt. Andrew Shulman of the 4th Battalion, Combat Aviation Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division said the circumstances will make the celebration a little different than at home.
It’s not just the cultural and religious sensitivities that make celebrating Hanukkah “downrange” in a predominantly Muslim land a bit of a challenge.
It’s the little things, too — like finding out that the base dining facility does not have kosher sour cream, seemingly a must for any potato latkes worth the name.

After Lubavitch, the reggae star is now hanging his hat with an ecstatic chasidic sect.
It is only a few miles from Crown Heights to Greenpoint, Brooklyn, but in some respects, the asphalt avenues linking them bridge entirely disparate worlds.
