Longtime Kfar Chabad Educator Passes Away at 68

KFAR CHABAD, Israel — The Jewish community of Kfar Chabad, Israel, mourned the passing Wednesday of resident Rabbi Amos Karniel, who passed away at age 68 after a long illness.

According to those who knew the veteran educator ñ who despite a debilitating disease that forced him to retire early continued to gather children together to read them stories ñ Karniel once remarked that the only difference between a carpenter and a teacher is that a carpenter can see the effects of his labor almost immediately. A teacher, on the other hand, must wait 25 or 30 years.

Production Underway for 3rd CD by Chassic Vocalist Mayer Rivkin

Historic District Rejects Synagogue

LITCHFIELD, CT — An orthodox Jewish group and the borough of Litchfield moved one step closer to a court battle over religious freedom on Thursday night after the historic district commission denied the organization's application to turn a Victorian home into a synagogue.

For the past six months, Rabbi Joseph Eisenbach of the Chabad-Lubavitch congregation has been meeting with the commission about his plans to restore a house on West Street and build an addition of about 20,000 square feet on the edge of the town's historic district.

Tragic Accident Claims Lives of Jewish Educators in Australia

SYDNEY, Australia — Australia's Jewish community was in shock Friday morning, one day after a horrific car accident along the main Sydney-to-Melbourne highway took the lives of longtime members Zev and Rochel Simons.

According to Australian news reports, the couple perished when the Toyota minivan driven by Rochel Simons, 48, crossed the median and was struck by a tanker truck. The driver of the truck, a 39-year-old man whose identity was not released by authorities, also died in the crash. Wreckage and the threat of fuel igniting blocked traffic on the arterial Hume Highway in both directions for hours.

Soot cakes the walls of North Miami Beachís Skylake Synagogue after a fire last week torched its kitchen.

North Miami Beach, Fla.'s, Skylake Synagogue sustained heavy fire and smoke damage last week when its kitchen went up in flames. Children were learning upstairs in the Hebrew School at the time, but according to synagogue Rabbi Rafi Rosenberg, co-director of Chabad-Lubavitch of Skylake, everyone made it out of the building in time.

Putin Awards Rabbi for Helping Stop Rampage

MOSCOW, Russia — President Vladimir Putin will confer a state award on a Chabad Rabbi for helping stop a young man who burst into a Moscow synagogue in January 2006 and stabbed nine worshipers, the Kremlin said.

Putin awarded the Badge of Honor order to Rabbi Yitzhak Kogan.

The Rabbis son, Yosef, a student at the Chabad school wrestled the attacker, is also due to receive an award from the Russian President.

Volunteerism Shaping our Future


BROOKLYN, NY [CHI] — The second annual leadership weekend for teen volunteer leaders will be held Friday, February 29 -Sunday, March 2, 2008, at the Meer Family Friendship Center in West Bloomfield, MI. The Weekend is a part of The Friendship Circle organization, a Chabad-based program which pairs service-minded teens with children who have special needs. BROOKLYN, NY [CHI] — A Siyum Sefer Torah was held in Bensonhurst, by Shliach and Rabbi 'Tiferes Torah', Rabbi Avrohom Hertz. The Sefer Torah was dedicated by Moshe and Elka Tseitin, who have become observant by influence of Rabbi Hertz. The couple dedicated the Sefer Torah in honor of their parents and despite the snowy weather a Sefer Torah parade proceeded through the neighborhood.

Fundamental Turn-of-Century Chasidic Treatise Released in English

BROOKLYN, NY — The publishing arm of the worldwide Chabad-Lubavitch movement, Kehot publications, released a revised translation last month of a fundamental treatise penned at the turn of the 20th century by the Fifth Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Sholom DovBer Schneerson, of righteous memory.

Entitled Tract on Prayer - or Kuntres HaTefillah in Hebrew ñ the discourse was first delivered by the Rebbe on Simchat Torah in 1899. In the address, the Rebbe explains that through prayer one is able to refine their character traits. He then instructs that prayer should be preceded by proper contemplation so that one can engage in Divine service with the utmost of devotion.

Hey Teves Book Fair in Oholei Torah!


CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — One of the instructions of the Rebbe following Hey Teves, Didan Notzach, was to purchase more Seforim. Oholei Torah marked it with a special book fair for the second year. Organized by the PTA of Oholei Torah along with assistance from OTEG [the Oholei Torah Eight Grade] a special fair was put together in the Lunchroom along with a Safrus workshop where kids got their own quill and piece of parchment, and games relating to Hey Teves.

Nes Gadol Hayah Sham!!

SYDNEY, Australia [CHI] — Close to 1000 people attended the ‘Chanukah with the Stars’ carnival organized by the Sydney Tzemach Tzedek community on Sunday 29 Kislev. This event turned out to be one of the most successful of its kind in this congregation’s history. However, this great event would have been reduced to failure, if not for the occurrence of an unexpected miracle.

Oldest Chosid Celebrates 96th Birthday

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn — As Rabbi Zalman Light celebrates his 96th birthday on the 5th night of Chanukah, the “Festival of Lights,” he is surrounded by 100+ children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren for the annual birthday party, which grows in number each year K"H.

Rabbi Light (Liachow) was born in 1911 and married Lena Minkowitz in 1944. After leaving Russia in 1946 with their first child, escaping the war through Germany & Austria, where the next two children were born, they settled in Toronto, Canada, and raised their children there amongst the Anash families in the area.

A Superlative Triumph – the Creation of Hatzolah in Sydney

SYDNEY, Australia — Rabbi Mendy Litzman arrived in Sydney from New York four and a half years ago. After studying here, he went to America to do his smicha (studies to become a Rabbi). We in Sydney are fortunate that he then returned to marry his wife Dani, and they have made their home here.

A certified paramedic working with Hatzolah in America, Mendy often responded to medical emergencies around him, and he saw an urgent need for something more structured. He knew that Hatzolah would be the answer. Hatzolah is known as “Community first responders”, and is now an established medical emergency response service.

Hanukkah in Iraq Calls for A Little Creativity

Soldiers set up a menorah outside the dining facility at Camp Taji, Iraq. Some 50 service members attended at the camp to mark the first night of Chanukah. Jewish chaplain Capt. Andrew Shulman of the 4th Battalion, Combat Aviation Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division said the circumstances will make the celebration a little different than at home.

It’s not just the cultural and religious sensitivities that make celebrating Hanukkah “downrange” in a predominantly Muslim land a bit of a challenge.

It’s the little things, too — like finding out that the base dining facility does not have kosher sour cream, seemingly a must for any potato latkes worth the name.

Chabad Of The Valley Lights Up Universal Citywalk For The First Night Of Chanuka!


STUDIO CITY, CA [CHI] — Chabad of the Valley had another smashing success at its sixth annual Chanuka extravaganza at Universal Studios Citywalk. “Look at the size of this crowd!”, said Rabbi Yossi Malka of Chabad of Encino as he ascended the lift to kindle the giant 16 foot menorah along with philanthropists George Schaeffer and Lyle Weisman. According to Rabbi Mayer Greene, the event’s emcee, the rousing concert and celebration had the participation of those who identify themselves as orthodox, conservative, reform or even unaffiliated Jews. In fact, many temples, day schools and other organizations encouraged their members to participate.

Yud Tes Kislev Rally for CYH Online School's Hebrew Division


BROOKLYN, NY [CHI] — After two weeks worth of preparations, a virtual online Farbrengen marking Yud Tes Kislev was held for all Hebrew-speaking Shluchim’s children attending The Shluchim Office's Online School, comprising the Twelve Pesukim, Divrei Torah, L'Chaims, Nigunim and even dancing.  Participants were able to hear and see each other online, creating an authentic Farbrengen atmosphere among Chassidishe peers.
