Chicago, IL — 18 Mitzvah tanks took part in the traditional Mitzvah Tank procession held in Chicago in honor of the 11th of Nissan the 105th birthday of the Rebbe. This year, the 11th year since the first tank parade has taken place in Chicago, 77 members of Anash and Tmimim manned the tanks and distributed Matzohs and informative brochures on Pesach, laid Tefillin with the men and handed out Shabbos candles - complete with candle lighting times to women. After stopping at several of the Chabad operated schools in the city, the parade, escorted by a police honor guard, arrived at the Daley Plaza in downtown Chicago and then individual tanks, decorated with Pesach theme signs and large pictures of the Rebbe, dispersed from there to 18 prearranged locations in the city.

Mansfield, MA — As a kid in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, young Yossi Kivman heard two sirens call.

“I wanted to be the first rabbi fireman,” Kivman says.

You'll never see Kivman, 29, pull up to a burning building on a Mansfield fire engine and run inside to rescue the occupants.

However, more and more area residents seek his help in fanning their interest in their Jewish heritage.

The Angell Street home from which Kivman and his wife, Tzivi, may not have sirens and ladder trucks, but Rabbi Kivman has no regrets. “I'll stick to my job. I think there's enough work on my side to do,” Kivman says

Chana Wilansky, Co-director of Chabad of

family refrigerator before cleaning it in
preparation for Passover.
Portland, ME — At one time, Ellie Miller didn't mind staying up until 2 or 3 in the morning cleaning the oven or lining cupboards in preparation for Passover, only to get up for work the next day.

Today, that's not as feasible, and she tries to find other ways to finish the cleaning and cooking in preparation for the Passover holiday, beginning April 2 this year.

In the days and weeks prior to Passover, Jews are asked to clean their homes of any chametz, or leavened food, which also symbolizes “getting rid of things that are weighing you down in life,” said Avis Smith, education director at Temple Beth El, a conservative congregation in Portland.

But during the weeks leading up to Passover, Strasberg, 29, also outfits himself in a crisp white apron and puffy chef's hat.

That's because the Philadelphia native and father of three runs matzah-making demonstrations — or “model matzah bakeries” — for Jewish children all over the region.

Rabbi Yossi Kahanov Shliach to Jacksonville, FL
More than 3,000 years ago the Hebrew people were freed from Egyptian bondage by the mighty hand of G-d. The event served as the corner stone and birth of the Jewish nation and religion.

Throughout history Jews have observed G-d's command to commemorate this event with the celebration of Passover. What is the message however, of this important holiday?

Our sages tell us, and we recite it every Passover in the Haggadah, “In every generation one must view him-self as though he him-self has gone out of Egypt”. The Hebrew word for Egypt is “Mitzrayim” which means “constraints”.

1. Our Sages tell us that the Shabbos before Pesach is called “Shabbos Hagadol – The Great Shabbos”.

Almost every year we read the Torah portion of Tzav on the Shabbos before Pesach, on “Shabbos Hagadol”.

The Shelah Hakodesh (lit. The Holy Shelah, Rabbi Yishaya Halevi Howrowitz) says that that every Torah portion which we read on Shabbos has a connection to the time of year in which we read it. Will boom-town Brooklyn see some relief from development in the near future?

At a recent round table focusing on real estate topics, developers expressed concern about changes to the city’s tax abatement policy for new construction, contending that proposed restrictions and the extension of the borough’s exclusionary zone will make it harder for them to do business, despite the hot real estate market across the borough.

Indeed, Sara Mirski, of Boymelgreen Developers, acknowledged to the group gathered at the Brooklyn Historical Society, 128 Pierrepont Street, that her company, concerned about the enlarged exclusionary zone in Brooklyn, had not purchased property for development for about two years.

Monroe NY — Chabad of Orange County’s annual Purim celebration was an African-themed party offering a way for Jews of diverse backgrounds to celebrate Purim together.

Rabbi Pesach Burston, dressed in authentic African garb, welcomed the crowd of 175 men, woman and children from throughout the county who came to the party on March 4 at the American Legion Hall in Monroe. The evening began with the traditional reading of the Megillah scroll of Esther, which depicts the story of Purim. Simultaneously, participants viewed a multi-media slide show illustrating the historical events of Purim. To drown out the name of the wicked adversary Haman, children enthusiastically jumped on gigantic bubble wrap, shook graggers (noisemakers,) and pounded on African drums.

New York, NY – Taking its queue from Corporate America, the matza baking industry will be following in the footsteps such mammoth corporations as Dell, Microsoft, and American Express.

Matt Saaven, president of the American Matza Bakeries Association (AMBA) explained the reason behind the move. “Due to the annual rise – no pun intended – in the costs of producing shmura matza, we are forced to find ways to lower our costs. Those savings will, in turn, be passed over – again, no pun intended – to our customers.”

On a freezing winter night as Napoleon lie under his warm covers, he was overcome by a sudden bout of thirst. Considering that in order to satisfy his craving he would have to leave his cozy conditions and go outside to fetch some water, he contemplated ignoring his nagging discomfort, but was quickly overcome by a powerful sense of shame.
“Napoleon! You have become all but lazy,” he said to himself. “There is, evidently, no difference between you and the common yokel.” With that, he tore himself out of bed and proceeded out the door to fetch himself some water.
By the time he walked across the field, where the fresh water was stored, he thought to himself: “Bonaparte, you really ought to be embarrassed of yourself. You are so weak you’d do anything to avoid a little discomfort. Have you no willpower to prevail over a tad of thirst? There is obviously no difference between you and the ordinary Joe.” He immediately retuned to bed without touching a drop of water.
Upon relating this story, the Chasidic master of Lublin, (The Chozeh) concluded: “This is what I call strength of character.”

Rabbi Bruce Warshal - Jewish Light Online
A few months ago I was walking in Times Square in New York City and there were two Chabadniks handing out literature proclaiming that the Rebbe, Menachem Schneerson, was the Messiah (Moshiach). They were in competition with a guy up the street with a sign proclaiming the end of the world and that Jesus will save us if we believe in him.

Being a curious person, or maybe just a contentious one, I approached the Chabad-Lubavitchers and asked how the Rebbe could be the Messiah since he died in 1994 and was buried in Queens? They responded that he really wasn't dead and that the person buried in the grave in Queens was his father-in-law. I walked away amused and a little irritated that these jokers were there in the name of Judaism. Last month my wife, Lynne, and I were in the subterranean 42nd Street subway station and another Chabad Chasid was distributing literature. Not to offend him, heaven forbid, I took what he was offering. It is this handout that I want to discuss. Hold on to your seats, because this stuff is amazing (that's a polite adjective for ludicrous).

Brooklyn, NY –- Beginning April 1st, a major New York health insurance company will begin offering a new type of specialty insurance, geared to the Orthodox Jewish community.

HIP (acronym for “Hardships Inflicted by Passover”), will begin to cover observant Jews who were harmed by Passover-related difficulties. The move comes after the company received numerous reports over the past few years of broken or missing teeth, clogged intestines, wine-stained white shirts and haggada’s, and popped pants buttons. Other damages include sore thumbs resulting from breaking thick matzos at the center, particularly during the yachatz ritual.

Neighbors said that they saw two people running away from the vicinity after hearing a series of pops, which they said sounded like someone was ‘banging on a door’.

The vehicle sustained significant damage including a shattered windshield from what appears to be a hammer, as well as shattered head lamps and rear window. The vandals did not stop at that, they brought along with them two paint cans, one white and one red and poured it all over the exterior and interior of the car.

Harrisburg, PA — When I arrived in State College, my cooking experience was limited to the vegetarian and macrobiotic styles, and for “crowds” no larger than 10; more often than not, I only cooked for two. I was told that Pennsylvania State University was a “pizza and beer” type of college, so I figured that my natural way of cooking probably wouldn’t be too popular.

Since food is a major way for Jews to connect to our culture, I felt it was better to cook a traditional Shabbos meal of matzah ball soup, kugels, chicken, all the works. And although my own private culinary tastes might not have jived, I knew how to read a cookbook, so I wasn’t frightened.

As he stood there marveling, he beheld a young man off in the distance shooting arrows. He immediately ran towards the boy. “Are you the sharpshooter who has landed all those bull’s-eyes?” he asked. “That is correct sir,” replied the young fellow with a sheepish grin. “You are an awfully talented individual. Where have you acquired such remarkable skill?” “To be honest,” said the lad, “I have developed my own foolproof technique.

This letter was sent out by the Council of Jewish Organizations of Flatbush, we are republishing it as it affects every single motor vehicle operator in New York State.

Dear Friend:

Each year hundreds of people within our community are arrested while driving with a suspended driver license. The Department of Motor Vehicles can suspend your driving privileges for a variety of reasons. The most common reason a license is suspended is if you don’t answer a traffic summons, or if you fail to pay the full fine or surcharge listed on the summons. If your license is suspended, it will remain in effect until you correct the condition that led to the suspension. All too often - hard working individuals end up in jail simply because they have neglected to answer traffic summonses.

Rabbi Avrohom Yitzchok Perlstein and his wife Fruma

Salem to open a Chabad Center in the state's capital.
Salem, OR — A Midwestern couple became the latest rabbinic family to move to Oregon to open a Chabad Center.

Chabad of Oregon now has centers in five cities: Portland, Ashland, Eugene, Hillsboro and now Salem. All of the centers are non-judgmental and devoted to reaching out to all Jews regardless of their level of observance, said Chabad of Oregon Director Rabbi Moshe Wilhelm.

Rabbi Avrohom Yitzchok Perlstein and his wife Fruma moved to Salem at the end of February with their two children 17-month-old Tzvi and 2-month-old Chaya Mushka. The couple had been serving as program directors of the Chabad Center in Bayside, Wisc. The rabbi is originally from Chicago and his wife grew up in St. Paul, Minn.

When I Wanted You Did Not - By Simon Jacobson

Today I attended a tragic funeral. All funerals are tragic, but some appear worse than others. Especially when a beautiful man, 61 years old, is killed by a drunken driver, leaving a grieving wife, ten children and countless relatives and friends traumatized.

Every tragic death reminds us (or should remind us) of all other senseless losses – and unbearable pain – beknownst or unbeknownst to us. How many broken hearts are crying around the world at this very moment? How do we respond to the millions of tears shed and the piercing screams echoing through the corridors of history?

The timeless question – why? why do terrible things happen to good people? – resurfaces its naked head in these timely moments of agony.

2) Why is it important to bring religion into one’s life?
Young people, especially, are searching for answers. I’ve seen that when spirituality is presented in a user-friendly, welcoming, joyful fashion — how Judaism is meant to be enjoyed — people are very receptive and curious.

All of the events are part of a growing wave in the Jewish community to attract younger Jews to the culture and spirituality of Judaism through nontraditional means.

“What this is, is an attempt to create a venue where we're focusing on values, ideas and commonalties,” said Rabbi Yonah Bookstein of Beach Hillel, which is helping put on the third annual Jewlicious event.

The Rebbe says:

1. In this week’s Torah portion Hashem tells Moshe Rabbeinu (Moses our teacher) to tell the Jewish people that they should atone for sinning horribly with the golden calf (see Chapter 32, Verses 1 through 6 which deals with the sin). Hashem tells the Jewish people that they can atone by giving a Ma’cha’tzis Hashekel (a half of a coin called a “shekel”) to the Mishkan (the Tabernacle).

The sage Rebbi Meir tells us that when Hashem told Moshe Rabbeinu that the Jews can atone by giving a half of a shekel Moshe Rabbeinu did not understand. To help Moshe Rabbeinu understand, Hashem took out a coin of fire from under His throne of honor (His Kisay Hakovod) and showed it to Moshe Rabbeinu. (See Jerusalemite Talmud, Tractate Shekalim, Chapter 1, Halachah 4).

Weekend Reminder: Spring Forward! Daylight Saving Time is here, so don’t forget to turn your clocks forward an hour.

This Sunday, March 11, some three weeks earlier than usual, Daylight Saving Time kicks in at 2 a.m. and will last until the first Sunday in November. Based on the passage of the 2005 Energy Policy Act that takes affect this year, DST has been extended by four weeks. Typically, DST begins the first Sunday in April and runs through the last Sunday in October.

The theory behind DST is that people make better use of the extended daylight hours. With longer “synthetic sunshine” consumers have less need for lights, and other appliances. Studies show that energy demand is directly connected to bedtime. During DST, the sun is already up by the time most people wake. Less energy is needed to light the home, so less energy is consumed overall.

Rabbi Yossi Kahanov Shliach to Jacksonville, FL
In the Torah portion that we read this Shabbos, Parshas Ki Sisa, the Torah relates that when Moshe came down from Mount Sinai with the second set of Tablets, the skin of his face was radiant. When Aaron and the people of Israel saw that his face was shining with a brilliant light, they were afraid to approach him.

Moshe summoned them and related to them everything that G-d had relayed to him on Mount Sinai. When Moshe finished speaking with them, he placed a mask upon his face.

The Torah further relates that whenever Moshe came before G-d to speak with Him, he would remove the mask. He would then go out and convey all that he had been instructed to the people of Israel. Moshe would then replace the mask upon is face until he would come to speak with G-d once again.
