Just before Pesach, a group of 30, 3rd grade students from Hebrew Academy in Long Island were treated to a grand tour Crown Heights, including the brand new Jewish Childrens' Museum and the Albany Matza Bakery. The kids especially liked the interactive fun games in the JCM.
The students were amazed by all the Lubavitchers they saw; in the words of one boy, "this is Rabbi city!"
Everyone thouroughly enjoyed the trip, except the bus-driver, who was annoyed by the delays at the Matza bakery.

Ten other people were injured in the fire and were treated by Hatzoloh and Shomrim, including two sisters who jumped out a second-story window and three firefighters. The boys who died were two brothers, Shyia and Yidal Matyas, 15 and 13, and their 7-year-old nephew, Shlomi Falkowitz.
A fire official said that the Halacha of leaving a flame burning during Shabbos and Yom tov has caused 35 kitchen fires at Bedford Gardens, the 600-unit apartment complex in Williamsburg, in the last several months.
Alternate side parking regulations are suspended on Monday, April 25 and Thursday April 26 and on Saturday, April 28-30 for holiday observance. All other regulations, including parking meters, remain in effect.

Passover, 5765 I send greetings to those observing Passover, beginning at sundown on April 23.
This celebration marks the historic exodus of the Israelites from Pharaoh's oppression more than 3,000 years ago. During Passover, Jews around the world gather with family and friends to share the story of G-d's deliverance of the Israelites from slavery to freedom. Through songs and prayers, they remember the blessings and mercy of a just and loving G-d. By passing this story from generation to generation, they teach the triumph of faith over tyranny and celebrate God's promise of freedom.
The lesson of this story is timeless and reminds us that even in the face of struggle, hope endures. As we work to bring hope to the oppressed, we recall the words of the Psalmist, which are read at the Seder meal: "This is the day the L-rd has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it."
Laura and I send our best wishes for a joyous Passover.

Families and Chabad Houses around the world are being urged to gather their children on Chai Nissan, Reb Levik’s birthday, Wednesday of Chol HaMoed, to say the Twelve Psukim and give Tzedakah in honor of Shlaimos HaAretz. In Crown Heights the children will be participating in the rally at 770 hosted by the National Committee for the Furtherance of Jewish Education.
The Rebbe said that giving away land is to put ‘Kol Beis V’Beis B’Eretz Yisroel’ each and every home in Eretz Yisroel in ‘Sekonos Nefoshos’ dire danger.
The Rebbe also said that Jewish children possess the ability to positively affect the entire Jewish people, based on the Posuk in Tehillim 8:3, ‘Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings You have established strength to vanquish Your enemies, to silence foe and avenger.’
Now is the time for us to mobilize our powerful troops, to call into the line of duty the pure voices of Jewish children. As the Sharon government threatens to put Jewish children in danger, we call upon Jewish children around the world to come to the rescue.
Participants in this campaign are asked to please send photos to: kids2therescue@yahoo.com. The pictures will be compiled and sent to the children in the endangered communities; to show them that children around the world are thinking of them and doing what they can.
Surely this show of Achdus will show Hashem that we are truly worthy of Moshiach Now!

Shul to close after Tuesday night Farbrengen - will reopen @ Licht Bentchen on Erev Shabbos
Workers have been busy all week with initial preparations to get 770 cleaned for Pesach.
Those preparations included cleaning all the light fixtures and painting of the beams throughout the Shul.
The painting took place late Monday afternoon and evening and while the workers did hang up "caution" tape and some signs indicating wet paint that still did not stop a number of people from accidentally brushing by the beams and being left with white paint on their jackets and clothes.
Following Tuesday nights 11 Nissan Farbrengen, the Shul downstairs will be in total "lockdown" till Licht Bentchen on Erev Shabbos so that the final cleaning, including the shining and waxing of the floors can be done.

EDUCATION AND SHARING DAY, U.S.A., 2005- - - - - - -
BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
A PROCLAMATION
As we enjoy the great freedoms of our country, we are mindful of our obligation to pass on to our children the values that sustain our liberty and our democracy. On Education and Sharing Day, we reaffirm our commitment to teach young people the lessons they need to preserve and strengthen our Nation, and to reach as far as their vision and character can take them.
Education and Sharing Day honors the memory of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, who established education and outreach centers that offer social services and humanitarian aid around the world. Commemorating his life and legacy teaches the next generation that a single life of conscience and purpose can touch and lift up many lives. By helping to heal a broken heart, surrounding a friend with love, feeding the hungry, or providing shelter for the homeless, we can change America for the better, one heart, one soul, and one conscience at a time.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim April 20, 2005, as Education and Sharing Day, U.S.A. I call upon all our citizens to dedicate their time and talents to help our rising generation grow into caring and responsible adults.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this nineteenth day of April, in the year of our L-rd two thousand five, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and twenty‑ninth.

A prominent Brooklyn rabbi is suing the Fire Department because the firehouse closest to his home was unmanned that day, which he claims caused his wife to die in a raging blaze. It is a situation that one fire union official says happens between 20 and 25 times a day all around the city — leaving firehouses unmanned for hours at a time.
"Lives can be lost by that type of foolish decision-making," said Rabbi Abraham Hecht's lawyer, Harry Rothenberg.
Hecht's wife, Lillian, an 82-year-old Holocaust survivor, was killed when a fire ripped through their Ocean Parkway home in Gravesend on Jan. 15, 2004.
The closest firehouse was Ladder 153 — on Avenue U and East Eighth Street, just blocks from where the rabbi lived — but they didn't show up because everyone working that day was out getting department-mandated physicals, according to the suit filed in Brooklyn Supreme Court.
Instead, a different company was forced to leave another fire in order to race to put out the flames at Hecht's home — which started when a portable heater was left too close to a chair, Rothenberg said.
Engine 254 — which is housed in the same building as Ladder 153 — arrived just three minutes after the first call to 911, said Fire Department spokesman Frank Gribbon.
"It took an incredibly long time for them to get there," Rothenberg insisted. "That engine apologized to family members because they were at another fire."
Now, Hecht — a prominent Lubavitcher rabbi — wants the Fire Department to be called to task for leaving an entire firehouse unmanned.
According to the court documents, Hecht, 83, claims the FDNY's gross negligence contributed to his wife's death.
He is seeking an undisclosed amount in damages, but more importantly, he wants to make sure something like this doesn't happen to anyone else.
Gribbon said that only about a dozen firehouses are left unmanned on any given day and that the department has been doing this for decades.
"We move the pieces around. The chiefs try not to strip any area of coverage," he said. "They move resources around to provide the best coverage possible."
Gribbon, who called the rabbi's wife's death a "terrible tragedy," pointed out that last year's number of fire fatalities, 82, was the lowest since 1919 when 77 people died

The annual melave malka of Congregation Ahavas Moische, better known as the Maple Street Shul, was held last Motzoei Shabbos, April 9 at the shul.
Because it is situated on what, until recently, had been the southernmost border of our neighborhood, the Maple Street Shul has long been considered a “community shul,” rather than merely of significance to local mispallelim. Its annual melave malka is traditionally attended by a wide spectrum of residents from all areas of Crown Heights.
The event drew around 200 people throughout the evening, including the Rov and Mara D’Asra, Rabbi Aharon Yaakov Schwei shlita, and the internationally noted activist and lecturer Rabbi Dovid Hollander shlita.
Rav Schwei reminisced about the fact that in his youth, the Maple Street shul was “his shul,” because he used to regularly review a maamar of Chassidus there for the congregants. He expressed great satisfaction at the growth that portion of the neighborhood is experiencing B”H, and urged that more homes in the area be purchased, so that before long, there will again be many shuls there, a mikveh, and so on.
Rabbi Hollander spoke movingly about Jewish issues and the need to stand firm in support of the Torah way of life. Referring to the current crisis the Maple Street Shul is undergoing, arising from the collapse of its retaining wall and the need to raise funds for its repair, Rabbi Hollander likened the shul itself, which has remained steadfast at the border and never let up in its activities, to a retaining wall. It symbolizes the need of all of us to remain at our posts and faithfully guard the boundaries of the Torah outlook.
“The Maple Street Shul,” the Rabbi proclaimed, “is the ‘retaining wall’ of Am Yisroel.”
Contributions to the emergency repair campaign can be made payable to Congregation Ahavas Moische and sent to the shul’s president, Eli Blachman, at 682 Lefferts Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11203.

Winner of the 2005 Cantors World Cantorial Talent Search, Berel Zucker Berel Zucker was born in Detroit in 1981. Berel's father, a Lubavitcher Chassid and chazzan, instilled in Berel and his brothers the rich Chassidic legacy of neginah and chazzanus, and would often play the recordings of Yossele Rosenblatt, who Berel maintains had a major impact on him growing up. While still a child, Berel's family made aliyah, settling in Jerusalem.
On shabbos, Berel and his father would walk to hear Chazzan Naftali Herstik and the choir of the Great Synagogue, and then walk to the Kosel (Western Wall) to hear Reb Shlomo Carlebach's late Friday night davening. While still a child, Berel and his brothers officiated as a choir on the High Holidays, often accompanying their father. Berel also sang with other choirs in Jerusalem, often appearing as soloist on recordings.
As a teenager, Berel sang with bands for weddings and Simchas in and around Jerusalem, before returning to the United States to learn in the Lubavitcher Yeshiva at Chabad Headquarters in Brooklyn. Berel currently studies at the Belz School of Jewish Music, Yeshiva University, where his courses include Nusah, Music Theory, Voice and piano. He is also a member and featured soloist in the Belz School Choral Ensemble. Berel also sings with the choir of Young Israel Beth-El in Boro Park (Cantor Ben Zion Miller).
For the last ten years, Berel has officiated as Chazzan for shabbos and high holidays in communities all over the world. Berel will be joining other top cantors in an upcoming Cantors World concert.

Rosenbaum's family, including the 71-year-old matriarch, is back in the city from Australia, once again seeking justice in the Hasidic scholar's death. "I don't forgive and I don't forget," Fay, 71, told the Daily News in an exclusive interview Wednesday, just before the Brooklyn Supreme Court judge hearing the family's civil case against the city issued a gag order.

The highlight of the Sefer Hamitsvos Contest weekend of Tsivos Hashem was the competition’s grand finale on Sunday. The awesome event was hosted by the Lubavitch Educational Center at the Deauville Beach Resort . In front of a crowd of more than 1,000, the boys competed in a fast-paced “game-show style” quiz -- a full-scale multimedia production, complete with computer-generated question boards, flashing lights, buzzers, sound effects and music. “The children’s grasp of the material was simply astounding,” says Rabbi Sholom Ber Baumgarten, Tzivos Hashem Director. “Within seconds, the children answered questions from memory that many scholars and even rabbis couldn’t answer without consulting a source.” In between the two rounds of the game show and after the second round, the audience was treated to live concert by chassidic super star Avrohom Fried. It was not your regular concert! The dancing and enthusiasm in the room was palpable.
Rabbi Yerachmiel Benjaminson, executive director of Tzivos Hashem said it was a most worthwhile investment for what these boys have accomplished is priceless. However, these children are really representing the more than 4,000 students from across the world who took part in the program, which was initiated as a means of fulfilling the Rebbe’s wish that every man, woman, and child learn the Rambam’s magnum opus Mishneh Torah or the more abbreviated Sefer HaMitzvos, which explain all of the 613 mitzvahs.

On Sunday 23 Adar II, April 3, 2005, dollars were once again distributed in 770.
According to reports, Gabbai Zalman Lipsker had hired a few Yungerleit to chase away the people in charge of the Dollars. At first, the two doors leading into the front hallway were locked and no one could enter it, so no one arrived to give out any dollars.
In order to prevent altercations, the Sefadi students had decided to hand out the dollars on the front lawn of 770.
However, an unforeseen development arose: The students wrote to the igros, which directed them in no uncertain terms, not to alter the place of the dollar distribution under any circumstances. With such a clear and definitive directive, the stalwart soldiers had no choice but to stand up to the powers-that-be and act.
At 2:50 PM, with the other students at lunch break, the Sefadi contingent managed to break through the door between the upstairs Shul and the front hallway. They placed a table with a blue cushion, sang yechi, and gave out dollars for a few minutes. About 10 Sefadi students participated.

The Rebbe's home on President street in Crown Heights was open today, 25th of Adar - birthday of the Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka of blessed memory. About 25 people participated in Maariv. This brought Crown Heights' residents to hope that the Rebbe's home would be open for davenning also on other special dates such as the oncoming 11th of Nissan - the Rebbe's birthday.

Rebbetzin Chaya (Moussia) Mushka Schneerson was born near the Russian city of Lubavitch, on the 25th of Adar in 1901 she was the second daughter of the sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak (the Mitteler Rebbe) and his wife, Rebbetzin Nechama Dina Schneersohn. From her earliest years, she absorbed the purity and holiness that surrounded her, in the house of her grandfather and her father.
Her striking regal bearing, her gentle sense of humor, and her compassionate consideration and sensitive manner endeared her to all, as illustrated in the following story. In May 1940, the Rebbe and the Rebbetzin, fled to Nice, France. In the course of their flight, there was a devastating bombardment. As people ran in every direction, she noticed an explosive shell heading towards a man next to her. Quickly pushing him to the ground, the Rebbetzin saved the man's life. Recounting this story the Rebbetzin said: "True, I saved his life, but for pushing a Jew one must repent."
The extraordinary respect that the Rebbe accorded to the Rebbetzin gives us a glimpse of her true stature.
Once, the Lubavitch Women's Organization sent her a bouquet of flowers, together with a list of individuals for whom blessings were requested. Setting aside the flowers for the Rebbetzin, the secretary passed the letter to the Rebbe who, observing that it was addressed to his wife, asked his secretary to give it to her, saying: "She too is capable of giving blessings."

Matiyahus first major TV interview - Click here
The new face of Jewish music wears a black hat and jacket and a long beard. He embeds divrei Torah in his songs, which rely heavily on Jewish and chasidic content. But his songs don`t come from the shtetl. Enter, instead, a bizarre matrimony between reggae, hip-hop, beatbox and Hasidic music. He is 25 years old and his name is Matthew Miller, aka Matisyahu. His new CD "Shake Off the Dust...Arise" derives from Isaiah 52:2, "Shake thyself from the dust; arise, and sit down, O Jerusalem: loose thyself from the bands of thy neck, O captive daughter of Zion," which readers will recognize from the Lecha Dodi of the Friday evening service.
Matisyahu`s unique blend begs the question of what sort of animal a Hasidic reggae performer might be. Can Jewish music maintain its Jewish component while diluting itself with other ethnic, traditionally secular and political music? And more importantly, how does that shed light on Jewish music and the larger world of postmodern music?

Mr. Leon Furth, National Security Adviser to former Vice President, Al Gore, has exerted 15 years of efforts on behalf of the return of the Lubavitcher Rebbe's Seforim from Russia. Furth has reached a small success entailing the restoration of several seforim, which he brought to the U.S. via the private plane of President Bill Clinton - Air Force One - in the winter of 5754. In a picture of Clinton and Furth on the plane, Clinton is seen (above) putting his hand on Furth's shoulder. When Clinton later sent the picture to Furth, he added this caption on the bottom:
"To Leon, lion of the Lubavitch Library. Congratulations on surviving to another Happy birthday. Bill Clinton ". This week, Mr. Furth is slated to testify at the Helsinki Federation for Human Rights, and to emphasize the importance of returning the Schneerson Library to the Chabad Headquarters in New York.
After so much un-creativity that has been displayed by so many Jewish artists, starting from the "Borrowed" music the singers sing to down to the singers singing Davening on a CD, I must say Jewish music became lame.
Now along came this brand new band, actually they have released a CD but it was a plain white label with no particular identification to it, now they seemed to have regrouped and arranged themselves quite nicely, band name, web site, pictures and all.
The fist thing I noticed was a poster of theirs which was so very different it seemed... ORIGINAL, so I took a look at the website and my my its just different so the first thing I did was went to the sample section, and listened to the available samples 3 in total and it was like a blast of fresh air. OK enough, here’s the links to the samples and to the website, it will say a lot more then I can.

For all those of you that dont know Doar is the little store on the corner of Crown and Kingston.
As far as I rember the first owner was Yerachmiel Zalmanov about 10 years back and he sold it Sholom Ber Levitin who now himself has sold it.
It so happens to be that our address is 383 Kingston Ave. as well.
What we can expect now would be longer hours and a more ordely store.

At approximately 9:45pm Motzei Shabbos, at the intersection of Union & Brooklyn, an elderly man walked into traffic while the light was in favor of the cars. By doing so, a car had to swerve violently to avoid him, and ended up piling into another car and actually going under it. Thanks to the watchful eye of Hashem, nobody was hurt. The driver was a yid, as was the pedestrian.

At approximately 9:20pm, Motzei shabbos, a van driven by a jewish family was driving down Albany when another chinese person in his car ran a red light on Union St. the driver of the van lost control and tried to swerve to miss the car and turned his wheel causing the van to spin around and end up hitting the side of a building on Union St. and coming to rest there. The passengers included a husband and wife. Hatzalah responded to the scene immediately and was able to transport the driver while the other patient was taken by FDNY to the hospital.
Later on at 12:36/1:36 Rabbi Lieder called one of his members to go down and make sure they were being treated and B"H both patients were being treated very well and were released from hospital with only bruising at 1:45/2:45 depending on what time you were holding
